Dear Colleagues!

We present to your attention the abstract of the new technical brochure No. 884 – “Time in communication networks, protection and control applications – Sources of time and methods of distribution”.

Time is becoming an integral part of the development of smart grids. This booklet provides reference material on Time Sources and Time Allocation in Protection, Automation and Control Systems (PACS), including recommendations and best practices. The brochure discusses time sources and their distribution systems for PACS, as well as many rapidly evolving standards and technologies, including IEC 61850, precision time protocol, traveling wave programs, transient monitoring systems, and more. Many user examples, considerations and recommendations for building reliable synchronization systems are summarized in the report.
